Humor & Wit Again!!

Ready for some more laughs and reflection, pals?!!

A foolish man tells a woman to STOP talking, but a WISE man tells her that she looks extremely BEAUTIFUL when her LIPS are CLOSED.

One GOOD way to REDUCE Alcohol consumption :
Before Marriage - Drink whenever you are SAD
After Marriage - Drink whenever you are HAPPY

Three FASTEST means of Communication :
1. Tele-Phone
2. Tele-Vision
3. Tell-a-Woman
Need still FASTER - Tell her NOT to tell ANYONE...

Love your friends not their sisters. Love your sisters not their friends.

Let us be generous like this : Four Ants are moving through a forest. They see an ELEPHANT coming towards them. Ant 1 says : we should KILL him. Ant 2 says : No, Let us break his Leg alone. Ant 3 says : No, we will just throw him away from our path.. Ant 4 says : No, we will LEAVE him because he is ALONE and we are FOUR.

If you do NOT have a Girl Friend - You are missing SOME thing in your life. If you HAVE a Girl Friend - You are missing EVERY thing in your life.

Question : When do you CONGRATULATE someone for their MISTAKE. Answer : On their MARRIAGE.

When your LIFE is in DARKNESS, PRAY GOD and ask him to free you from Darkness.
Even after you pray, if U R still in Darkness - Please PAY the ELECTRICITY BILL.

3 Easy Ways to Die :
Take a Cigar daily - You will die 10 years early.
Drink Rum daily - You will die 30 years early.
Love Someone Truly - You will die daily.

Why Governments do NOT allow a Man to MARRY 2 Women.
Because per Constitution, you can NOT BE PUNISHED TWICE for the same Mistake.

Keep smiling!

Where do we go now...

Now and then when I see her face, She takes me away to that special place... And if I'd stare too long, I'd probably break down and cry...

Can't stop humming Sweet Child o Mine by Guns and Roses. Watta lovely song! And the beats... Stunning!! Especially when someone sings it to you... Wowwww, feels great :-)

I've been taking it easy, and loving it for the past month. It's been approx 25 days since I resigned from my full-time position, and it's not bad at all. I get to read, I get to laze about, I can swim, and I can hang out... Money's not everything in this world, buddies!!

(I'm not recommending all of you to leave your job!!)

But I'm surely recommending this - check out a few funky shows on MTV and Channel V. They're worth the time!

The programmes in question are Airtel MTV Connected which stars twins who display their kosmic connection. The judges are none other than Nikhil Chinappa and the now famous twin-pair Raghu and Rajiv of Roadies fame. One pair of the twins on the show are apna Naumi and his twin - Salman. Quite a fraternity... Some of them do real silly things, but it can be quite interesting at times. Check out on Saturday night at 7.

The other show is Channel V English Medium. Here they translate the lyrics of a song into English. Which means Mar Jaani from Billu (Barber) becomes I'm going to die, I swear I'm going to die :-D
Hilarioussssssss...

Simpoo's Super Hits with comments and Nach Le with Santa Banta, both on Channel V are also good timepass. Love the way Banta does the moon walk, and Santa shakes his booty!

Too much about TV... Time to tell you something more educational ;-) I realised I couldn't take Chamundi Hill in concentrated doses anymore so I started The Associate alongside. I actually hate reading two books simultaneously, but I just HAD to do it this time. I've however discovered a more useful application of Glucklich's tales. They can be read to kids as bedtime stories... Minus the moral and philosophical baloney...

Grisham's novel is about this brilliant law student Kyle McAvoy who is blackmailed to join a reputed firm and steal important secrets. The classical paradox of how doing exactly what you want to do can become so detestable coz someone else is holding the threads and you're a mere puppet... So far, so good...

Someone has aptly nicknamed me "Water Baby". It's my Day 8 of swimming, and I've already been moved to the 5 feet depth... What sure counts is that I'm 5 feet 7+ so my head stands above the water level. It's still difficult though, the breast-stroke (which I think should be renamed as the turtle/tortoise stroke). I've got this horrible cramp in my leg for the last 2 days, and my arms are aching like hell! But nothing can beat the fun of staying above the water and moving your body artfully... Feels sexy ;-)

What still remains a challenge is holding your breath underwater. I watched David Blaine on AXN the other day in a show titled Drowned Alive, and the dude held his breath underwater for a solid 7 and 1/2 minutes... Shucks... Some magician! (But hey, I can breathe while I swim now, so this doesn't worry me much!)

Women are SOOO typical. I mean even before they put their fingers into the shower, they squeal and shriek saying the water is chilly. They comment on other swimmers in their oh-so-passe manner "Agaaa baiii, she joined yesterday only naaaa, she swims so well, very light naaaa, and age also...." :-D

Scarcely is that done than they announce their difficulties time and again to anyone who can spare a moment. "When I was small na, I almost drowned, so I am verryyyyy scared of water u know..." and "I'm so fat na, it is very tough to float the body" ROFL...

They laugh at silliest jokes by the coach, and spend half their time in the pool looking at other people. Well... fine, suit yourself... But what annoys me now is that the coach doesn't get into the water himself to teach us. He stands and walks around as he guides us and points out our mistakes and strengths. Never seen a swimming instructor behave this way... Maybe it's coz its the ladies batch, so he doesn't feel comfy sharing the pool with so many oomph-laden dames ;-) (The caretaker has no such qualms, and he enters the water full force, bald head and funny trunk in tow...)

There are these 2 really sweet old ladies who just come and wade in the water. One's 70, the other's around 50. Cute grannies, really appreciative and friendly. I wish I'm like them when I get that age...

By the way, did you hear this? Singing sensation MJ aka Michael Jackson is no more. He suffered a cardiac arrest (could be due to a drug overdose by his uncertified doc who's missing). This is sucha loss... He was amazing man, Black and White, Dangerous, Thriller and other unforgettable tracks... Here's my tribute to him... May his soul rest in peace. There won't be another like him...

Time to run. Buzz you later lads and lasses!

Happy weekend!!

Agony

Someone who'd understand her...
Someone who wouldn't hurt her...
The one who could make butterflies fly in her stomach with his cute words and adorable acts...
He who would always stand by her come what may...
That person who would care for her, her needs and feelings selflessly... unconditionally...
The guy who'd make her feel like a pampered kid...
And the man who could make her feel like a beautiful and wantable woman...
That wonderful individual who'd do anything to see the smile on her face... to wipe the tears before they appeared on her cheeks...
Someone who'd give up the world for her joy and love.....................

Did sucha person really exist?

Would she ever find him?
Would he truly like and respect her??
Would he stay with her forever???

The young princess looked out her pretty marble window immersed deep in thought. She stayed in a huge tower like Rapunzel, but she did not have the famed long blonde hair that her Prince Charming could use to climb up to her. Didn't need them anyway... What were the stairs for?!!! Old romantic tales were so tacky and melodramatic!!

However, she sure could do with some romance in her life... All her childhood years, she'd heard, read and watched on TV stories of love and mush, of couples who met and lived happily ever after... She knew friends were important, but nobody was as essential as that one lifelong companion who one couldn't live without...

She knew she'd meet him sooner or later. And she has grandiose ideas about her soulmate. Though she had heard "noone's perfect", it didn't stop her from visualizing and dreaming away... Nothing could rein in her imaginative yearning. You know how those crazy teenage years are!! So full of hope and desire for miracles and love...

The courtiers' kids played below, full of cheer and contentment, unaware of the overhead brooding of the fine princess. The royal girl envied their bliss... Her own thoughts oscillated between the past and future, never staying in the present for more than was absolutely necessary. Sorrow and frustration seemed to be her constant mates, and she was so sick of it all... Being a princess wasn't all kicked up it's meant to be...

And who knew that better than her? There were smiles and pleasures and luxuries of course, but they did not mean much to her. As usual, the one who has it, never values it. The beggar doesn't value his freedom and the busy professional cares a damn for his hectic schedule. Such is life!!

As she wallowed in her overpowering sadness, a bowl clanged in the kitchen. Teh maids always created sucha din as they worked. They chatted about trivial stuff or cribbed about their families and inflation. They gossipped and they quarrelled. And they enjoyed every second they led... Living in the moment, that's what it's called, eh?

The wait was getting tedious. When the hell was her Prince Charming going to come? Was he asleep after having the poisoned apple akin Sleeping Beauty? Or was he living the life of a frog akin the Frog Prince? Despite her impatience, the princess knew she'd never give up.

She'd promised her father, the King of the Seven Lands, that she'd stay away from the entire world and kingdom as long as she had to, if only she was granted a peaceful life with her beloved, when she met him...

She was bad-tempered but kind, and there were those that admired her sensibility and intelligence. Not many knew that she cried in her sleep, coz she bestowed gigantic smiles on all those who happened to glance at her. The villagers called out to her as they passed her window, and she always came running, ready to hear their worries and joys. She was a friend to everyone, a counselor to many and an ideal for a few.

But ask her what she thought of herself...

The answer was always the same...

Lonely...

Waiting...

When will her Prince come to take her away?

When???

English is a Phunny Language...

Hiya...

English training is fun... But something that sure is funnier is reading the "mishaps" that occur so frequently wrt the language...

English is a Phunny Language...

And don't we all know that??
How come "to" is too, "do" is doo, but "go" is not goo???!!!

That's an old one. And I've heard so many of them right since childhood - those about Indian professors and their bouncers in class - "Open the doors of the window!" and "Get out inside!" and "Draw a circle of any shape!" I'm sure you have come across them, too...

Here's some
taaza maal, freshly outta the oven, just for ya, loyal readers... Some notice boards noticed in London (Not sure if they were put up by Indians!!)

Enjoy!!

Nayi Leher (=New Wave)

Yabadabadooooo...

This shriek of delight comes courtesy my first swimming lesson. YES!! I've finally taken some constructive action towards one of my goals in life... And boy, am I HAPPY!!! I was peeing my pants thinking about how I'll make a fool of myself and be the laughing stock of the entire clan... But hey, it wasn't bad at all... I have a wonderful Sir (atleast he's nice as of now; strict though!) I did very well on the first day, and I was delighted when the coach exclaimed to another learner that "Just coz she's doing it, does not mean you should be able to do it!" I was never slow you know ;-) It's great to be the student for a change... Been a trainer too long!!!

Climbing Chamundi Hill is an tedious ascent for me. I bought the book thinking it would have mythological stories that would be as interesting as the Mahabharata. However, this one is more like the Panchatantra or Vikram-Betal tales. There are short stories laden with religious and moralistic meaning; not exactly my cuppa tea, but I hate leaving books midway (the only ones I ever left are the Monk who sold his Ferrari and Tuesdays with Morrie - both philosophical and religious... No self-help novels for me, dudes!!) So, I'm stuggling to finish a few pages everyday... Waiting to end it and start Grisham's The Associate. And if it disappoints me, heaven save you all :-D

The news hogging newspaper headlines is racist attacks on Indians in Australia. Whats the big deal fellas? Don't we all know that everybody, and I mean EVERYBODY hates Indians?!! In fact, even Indians hate Indians... So, lets just quit all the smart comments. I really dunno whats it about us folks that bothers the rest of the world. But hey, until the time we become a super power, lets just keep our traps shut... Lets at least not wreck the peace of our countrymen. The foreigners are doing a great job of it already....

The other news is that the Splitsvilla series is over - Siddharth and Sakshi won! Unbelievable.. But somehow I think they will host an MTV show better than overconfident Joanna and extra-dumb Mohit...

Another programme I saw recently on TV was Agent Love, where Juhi goes around playing matchmaker for people too shy to express their love. Madame Cupid helps these lovers to profess their feelings and get them hooked up. While its cute to propose to your loved one this way, I also can't help thinking that it could be SO embarassing! Just like what transpired at my friend's bro's engagement 2 weeks ago. The sweet guy sang for his beloved fiancee and I saw that while she was elated, she was blushing like a peach! PDA (Public Display of Affection) can be so adorable at times, and so revolting at others... Guess it's about the way you do it... I don't know how I'd feel if I were to experience sucha scene... But I'm game ;-) As I always say... try everything in life once... except drugs...

Well, for those interested in me (LOL... that sounds corny!), the news is that my work's going OK. I do basic English training for a group of 6 students every afternoon and a personal coaching for an advanced professional on alternate evenings. Some days are astonishingly amazing, and then there are those lethargic sessions when all I wana do is run away screaming and not look back!! There's this young gal in my batch who surprised us all by letting go her silent demeanor on Friday and talking nonstop. This week, she's back to her
shant svabhav... And then there are others... All unique in their own right... The point is, it's fun... And I'm not missing my full-time job one bit!!

I was fooling around on FC Road on Sunday, and I happened to pass by Ashish Plaza that hosts different sales throughout the year. I'm not sure how, but they manage to draw humongous crowds whatever the product. The product in question on this particular ocassion happened to be Jockey merchandise. People were flocking in droves to get their hands on the stuff!! Men and women, adults and children - everyone was purchasing
chaddis and ganjis as if this was the last ever source of undergarments on Earth! ROFL... The checkout queue was well over 2 miles long!!

Reminded me of the solar eclipse thats happening on July 22, a day before my birthday :-D (Hinty-hint!) This is supposed to be the last solar eclipse that we shall see in this lifetime. The next one will happen after 105 years... Lord, my bday's so much better. It occurs once every year!! And it could happen oftener, I sure don't mind :-P

Awritey... I gotta go, but you guys keep coming back... And leave me your notes so I know you've been here... Love to hear from you... And I mean YOU...

Tadaaaaaaaa!!

Greek Gods and Goddesses - III

Namaskar people!

Took a break from this saga to tel you about ISABS and my Fosters party experience...

Now back to the ultimate sequel of the Olympians... Bringing you the last of the lot... Yennjooyyy people!!

Hermes – the Greek God of Trade and Messenger of the Gods. He shows dead souls the way to Hades's realm and likes to trick people. He is inventive and created the lyre. His Roman name is Mercury.

Cunning Hermes was born inside a cave as son of Zeus and the mountain Nymph Maea. He felt an irresistible impulse of stealing ever since his infancy and quickly developed as the god of the cheaters and the thieves. He has wings on his sandals and therefore is the speediest of all Greek gods.

Thanks to this speed, Hermes received the role of messenger and conductor of souls to the Underworld. The only Olympian god authorized to visit Heaven, Earth and the Underworld, Hermes enjoyed tremendous popularity among gods and spirits.

Most common depiction of Hermes: A young man, wearing traveling clothes, a flat hat known as "petasus" and winged sandals on his feet. Oftentimes he was also considered to have wings attached to his shoulders and hat. Hermes usually held a winged staff with snakes wrapped around it in his hands in order to gain access everywhere.

Hestia - Goddess of the hearth, home and family. This eldest daughter of Rhea and Cronus gave up her seat as one of the Twelve Olympians to tend to the sacred flame on Mount Olympus for Dionysus. Her Roman name is Vesta.

Calm Hestia personified the fire that was burning in the hearth of every home. All families were pouring sweet wine in her name and the fire was not allowed to go out by any family unless it was ritually extinguished. Hestia herself never left her residence, the sacred mountain of Olympus.

All Olympian deities respected and loved Hestia because of her kind, forgiving soul and her discrete character, since Hestia never participated in any disputes or wars. Hestia may not have had a public cult, but she was always worshipped in any temple, regardless of the god it was dedicated to.

Hestia was one of the three virgin goddesses, next to Athena and Hera. Both Poseidon and Apollo wished to marry her; however Hestia had given the oath to Zeus to never enter into a union with a male and to remain forever pure and undefiled.

Poseidon was the God of the Seas, the horses and the earthquakes. Son of Cronus and Rhea, his Roman name is Neptune.

Poseidon was considered to be bad-tempered, moody and greedy. He possessed two palaces, one up in Mount Olympus and the other in the depths of the seas, bejeweled with gold and precious gems. However, Poseidon preferred to stay with his wife Amphitrite beneath the ocean.

Poseidon was the Greek god responsible for natural and supernatural events, mainly the ones associated with the sea world. He possessed a trident which was so powerful that it could shake the earth. Poseidon could cause tempests and earthquakes, drown lands, shatter rocks and had the ability to finally bring back peacefulness.

Most common depiction of Poseidon: Imposing and strong with long, blue hair. His symbols and weapons: The trident and the dolphin, horses, sea foam. (Quite resembles the Hindu god Shiv Shankar, eh?)

Finally, Zeus - The Supreme king of the Gods in Ancient Greece, the ruler of Mount Olympus, ruler of mankind and the god of the sky and thunder. His Roman name is Jupiter.

Zeus was the last child of the titans Cronus and Rhea. His official wife was his sister Hera, the goddess of marriage and monogamy. However, Zeus was renowned for his numerous love affairs.

Zeus was respected and awed by all Gods and mortals. He was the "Lord of Justice", punishing anyone who lied or broke an oath, but was fair and always striving to keep a balance of all things.
Furthermore, Zeus was responsible for the weather and was shaping it according to his temper. When in high spirits, Zeus was blessing the world with fine weather; in case of bad mood, however, he would throw rain, winds, lightning and thunderbolts to cause disaster to the mortals. But even Zeus' powers had their limits, for, however powerful as he was, he had neither the right nor the ability to intervene the decisions of the Fate.

Most common depiction of Zeus: Imposing with long, curly hair. His symbols and weapons: The eagle, bull, oak, the scale and the thunderbolt

Phew! That was quite a task... But, mesmerizing, hai na?!! Wish I could find a book that told all these stories coherently and sequentially. My organized brain can’t handle things flung together without a timeline!

Let me know if you find one!
And let me know how you found this entire compilation :-)
You know I like to hear from you...

Take care!

Indian People, Australian Beer

Hello buddies,

Told you I’d write about the Fosters party I went to on Sunday. And you know how conscientiously I keep my promises…

So, it happened like this. I am a member of Indiblogger which is a website dedicated to bloggers of Indian origin. I received an email from them saying that I was invited to a fun afternoon with the theme “Art of Chilling” arranged by Fosters at Blue – Club Solaris in Koregaon Park (the swanky poolside next to Hard Rock Café in the Pyramid lawns campus). There would be free food and lotsa beer, possibly a few celebrities and rocking music. Having nothing to lose, and a new experience in the offing, I found no reason to say no, and off I went with a friend in tow. If Fosters needs some publicity, then I’m happy to help!!

Now leme be honest, the scene looked gloomy when I entered. I was among the first few guests to arrive, and I was mentally making plans to pack up in an hour. A few firang ladies dancing and swimming in the pool provided some entertainment, and the barbecued meat and chilled beer kept us good company. And when I'd had enough of the blaring music, the party kicked off... Dhinchaak dhinchak dhinnn

Lord!! People can have FUN!! I so wish I was like them, spontaneous and care-a-damn… More than a few folks got into the pool with all their clothes on, while others had come prepared with their trunks and towels. The water looked tremendously inviting, and I promised myself afresh to learn swimming soon. The fun really got to me, and as I munched on barbecued chicken, paneer and prawns (I’m allergic to mutton, and I hate the smell of fish), I sat back on my strategically placed wicker chair and relaxed. I'm sure the pure veggies would have been disappointed coz of the limited fare, but nobody seemed to be compaining.

Much to my chagrin, disappointment and annoyance, not all stuff was free. Read ICECREAM... I wanted to strangle the firang kudi who was having the time of her life relishing a chocobar that was being sold to us lesser mortals for 100 bucks... Talk about discrimination!!
(I vowed to catch one myself on my way home, and I made good on my promise. For 20 bucks, and not a dime more!!)

So, basically, the youngsters were having a gala time with their gangs. The gori mems served everyone chilled beer and merrily posed for pictures. The exuberant atmosphere was infectious, and not one single soul I saw was feeling out of place - be it the kids who were bouncing in the kiddies pool, or a sardarji eyeing and enjoying the sight of a dozen+ beer cans on our "public" table... A woman who kept doing the same fu**ing dance step for over 2 hours bang in front of me, and another who kept rushing to the poolside to pass on towels to her involuntarily-thrown-in-friends... It was a crazy collection!!

I could hear peals of disappointment when the DJs (Tally, and I think Lokesh) said that it was time to wrap up... But hey, all's well that ends well, right?

By the way, I never realised if there were any celebrities. Everybody looked like one... LOL.

Great party guys! Thanks Fosters and Indiblogger... And keep these events going...

(And inviting me, of course!!!)

Raise a toast!! And then get fish like a drunk :-D

Sayonara!

Greek Gods and Goddesses - II

Hiii!!

How ya doing readers? Ready to start rocking?!!

Athena - Goddess of wisdom, skill, warfare, handicrafts and reason. She is the sister of Ares, and daughter of Zeus and Metis. Her Roman name is Minerva, and she sprung from Zeus's head in full body armor. She is the wisest of the gods (as her mother was keeping inside herself all the world's wisdom).

Athena, one of the three Eternal Virgin goddesses (the other two are Hera and Hestia), was the sophisticated goddess who taught mankind various skills. She was always giving precious advice and stood by on any danger. Athena officially became the patron deity of the city of ancient Athens and the Parthenon was built in her honor. She was known as "Athena Nike" (Athena the victorious), as she was believed to have given the Athenians the victory during the Persian War.

Most common depiction of Athena: A tall, slim woman with glaucous eyes wearing a suit of armor. Her symbols and weapons: The owl, the aegis and the olive tree.

The sixth, Demeter, is the Goddess of fertility, grain and harvest. Daughter of Cronus and Rhea, sister of Zeus, her Roman name is Ceres. (My favorite fruit juice!)

Demeter was a peace-loving deity and the source of all growth and life; she was the goddess who provided all nutrition on the earth and taught mortals how to cultivate the earth and ease life. She was most appreciated for introducing wheat to mankind, making man different from animals.

Her symbols and weapons: The ear of wheat, the scepter, torch, and corn.

Dionysus – The God of wine, parties/festivals, madness and merriment. He represents not only the intoxicating power of wine, but also its social and beneficial influences. He was a Lover of Peace and his Roman name is Bacchus.

Dionysus was the son of the Zeus and the beautiful Theban Princess Semele, daughter of King Cadmus and Armonia (Harmony). He was one of the Olympian gods who did not live in Mount Olympus but was constantly travelling around the world to discover the secrets of winemaking.
Dionysus was known for his joyfulness and always offered his help to anyone in need. He was therefore very popular among gods and mortals and many feasts were being held every year in his honor.

Most common depiction of Dionysus: A handsome young man with impressive hair and a wreath of ivy on his head. In his hand he holds a "thyrsos" - a light staff wrapped with leaves of ivy and a pine cone on its top. His symbols are the grape vine, ivy, and thyrsus.

Hades - God of the Dead and ruler of the underworld. Son of Cronus and Rhea, brother of Poseidon, Zeus and Hera, and consort to Persephone (whom he abducted from her mother Demeter). His Roman name is Pluto.

Hades almost never left his gloomy kingdom; he stayed there surrounded by darkness and silence. His helper was Charos (the angel of dead), whose duty was to transfer the dead people's souls over the River Acheron from the world of the living to the world of the dead. Furthermore, Hades had a dog with three heads which was named Cerberus.

His symbols are the bident, the Helm of Darkness, and the three-headed dog, Cerberus.

The ninth God, Hephaestus - Greek God of Fire, Metallurgy and the Smith. He was the ill-fated son of Zeus and Hera (although it was considered by some that he had been conceived prenuptially), and his Roman name is Vulcan.

Hephaestus was a very kind and loveable god, but was the only deity who was physically ugly and lame. When his mother Hera saw him for the first time, she was so frustrated that she threw him from Mount Olympus to the depths of the seas, causing a deformation to his leg. He was rescued and raised by two Nereids inside a cave, hidden from his cruel mother.

Hephaestus made armor for the gods and other heroes like Achilles. He worked closely with the one-eyed Cyclops to create strong thunderbolts for his master Zeus. Famous for having created the first woman of the ancient world (Pandora), he was cheated upon by his wife Aphrodite coz he was deformed.

Symbols and weapons of Hephaestus: Fire, the axe, pincers and hammer.

Hera - Goddess of Marriage and Family and protector of married women. She is the sister and wife of Zeus. She often appears with peacock feathers and her Roman name is Juno.

Although Hera was one of the fairest goddesses in Mount Olympus, Zeus was giving Hera plenty of reason to be suspicious and jealous. Hera therefore used to stay in high places in order to keep an eye on her husband's doings. Many times she also caused harm to Zeus' mistresses, as Zeus himself was invincible.

Hera, despite being a mother of four, embodied the eternal virginity, since she annually renewed her virginity by bathing in the spring of Canathus. Thus, she was considered one of the three virgin goddesses in ancient Greece.

Most common depiction of Hera: A beautiful, mature woman wearing an ornate crown and golden sandals. Her symbols and weapons: The peacock, the scepter, diadem and the pomegranate as a symbol of fertility.

You ain’t dozing off, are you?
Okie, bye for now.

Greek Gods and Goddesses - I

Hello!

Before I tell you about the Olympians (Greek gods and goddesses), there's a few updates today.

One is that I watched Angels and Demons starring Tom Hanks, the sequel to the very amazing Da Vinci Code. Unfortunately, this one doesn't quite make it to my hit-list. The reason being, that though the pace and Hanks keep you in your seat, the lack of depth in the storyline and the lost grip over the climax really cheeses you off. The movie is about this demented padre who wants to become the Pope and how does he do it? By killing his own father (also the Father of the Sistine Chapel), kidnapping some important cardinals and having them murdered, while at the same time, pulling off a major stunt with some antimatter and physics shit that I just couldn't grasp. My rating - strictly 5/10, and it's 3.5 for Hanks and 1.5 for the exuberant direction.

The other update is that there's 85 pages left for New Moon to get over. And I'm wondering whether to continue my obsession with the Twilight series or just bid adieu for fear of being let down in the next sequels...

And the final one... is that I went for the Indiblogger party in Pune hosted by Fosters at Blue - Club Solaris, Koregaon Park yesterday. It was a free invite-only event, and they promised free beer and lotsa food, all on the house... How was it? Shall write a post on that later... I owe it to them, ya!!

Back to where we let off... The Olympian Greek Gods... Ready, public?!!

Here we go... In alphabetical order...

Starting with Aphrodite - the Greek goddess of Love, Lust, Beauty and Eternal Youth. Her Roman name is Venus and she is the most attractive among goddesses. Wife of Hephaestus (the smith of the Heaven and God of the Iron) and lover of Ares (the God of War), her son is Eros (winged cupid of love).

This sensual goddess is connected with the death/rebirth of nature and human beings. She was created from the foam of the crystal waters of Paphos in Cyprus, when the titan Cronos slew his father, and threw his genitals into the sea.

Most common depiction of Aphrodite: A highly attractive young woman with curled eyelashes, dressed elegantly. Her symbols and weapons: The girdle, which Aphrodite used to compel love, the seashell and the mirror. (Wiki says it is the scepter, myrtle, and dove).

Next is Apollo - God of music, prophecies, poetry, and archery. Also said to be the god of light and truth. He is associated with the sun, and referred to as the most beautiful of the gods. He is Artemis (goddess of the hunt)’s twin brother, and son of Zeus and Leto.
Apollo invented the lute but he is more popular for playing the lyre that was invented by Hermes (messenger of the gods). He also owned the precious gift of prophecy, given to him by his father Zeus in his infancy.

Most common depiction of Apollo: Handsome and youthful with impressive golden hair. His symbols and weapons: The lyre, bow, the tripod, the laurel tree and the navelstone.

Up next is Ares - God of war, murder and bloodshed (basically any kind of violence). Brother to Athena (goddess of Wisdom and Skill, also goddess of war – but only for the sake of justice), son of Zeus and Hera, his Roman name is Mars. Quite a story this youth has...

This bloodthirsty god of War had his residence up on Mount Olympus, his throne upholstered with human skin. He was accompanied by Eris, the goddess of discord and his secret mistress was Aphrodite. Their union resulted in the birth of Armonia (Harmony), which was seen as a blend of two opposing powers.

Just like his mother Hera, Ares had a very difficult character to deal with and was therefore rather unpopular among the other deities and mankind. For this reason, no Greek city wanted to have him as its patron. He often had conflicts and fights with Artemis (goddess of the Hunt) and also with his sister Athena, especially during the Trojan War. Ares was the first Greek god to be tried for murder in the hill of Areios Pagus. His symbols and weapons are: The spear and dogs, vultures, boars.

I’ve just told you about Artemis – the Greek goddess of the Hunt. She is also associated with the Moon, Childbirth and as protector of the young. Child of Zeus and Leto, Artemis is a virgin goddess. Her Roman name is Diana.

As a child, Artemis had asked from her father Zeus to remain an eternal virgin and therefore became one of the three Virgin Goddesses in Greek mythology. Artemis' twin brother was Apollo, the god of the Sun, whereas Artemis' cult was connected with the Moon. Born before Apollo, she helped her mother Leto give birth to her little brother.

This wild goddess had absolute autonomy over nature and was said to bring fertility to all places that worshipped her. Usually accompanied by Nymphs and Oceanids, Artemis loved to hunt with arrows dipped in poison.

Most common depiction of Artemis: Armed with bow and arrows and wearing a knee-high chiton. Her symbols and weapons: The bow, the snake and the deer.

Time out... More later!

Obsessed with Greek Mythology

Hi friends,

I'm enjoying my stint as a freelance English Language trainer. (Hell, I LOVE teaching man!!) It gives me time to do nothing, and also the time to enjoy doing what I want. Cheers to happiness and satisfaction!!

I'm relishing and greedily devoring page after page of New Moon these days... Gosh, now alongwith Edward, I think I'm in love with Jacob as well. LOL.... But hey, I’m also finding myself very interested in Greek mythology. (Of course our Mahabharata and Ramayana are wonderful stories, but the tales of the Greeks sound fascinating, too.)

I was deliberating whether or not to do a section on Greek history as I realized I did not have much to add to the names and descriptions. But hey, a blog is a blog is a blog. (Whatever that means!)

So, I decided to do a post (more than three actually) on Greek history. My sources are
Wikipedia (obviously) and another site wholly dedicated to this topic called Greek Gods Info. Hope you enjoy reading as much as I enjoyed analyzing and compiling!

Greek mythology has exerted an extensive influence on the culture, the arts, and the literature of Western civilization. Archaeological evidence is the major source of detail about Greek mythology. The oldest known Greek literary sources are the epic poems Iliad and Odyssey that focus on events surrounding the Trojan War.

Most events are not sequentially described, and hence, in order to comprehend the universe and the origin of the world, myths of origin or "creation myths" are explained. The most widely accepted version today is reported by Hesiod, in his Theogony. He begins with a yawning nothingness termed Chaos, out of which emerged Eurynome, Gê or Gaia (the Earth) and some other divine beings like Eros (Love), the Abyss (the Tartarus), and the Erebus.

Without male assistance, Gaia gave birth to Uranus (the Sky) who then fertilized her. The Titans were born from this; six males - Coeus, Crius, Cronus, Hyperion, Iapetus, Oceanus, and six females - Mnemosyne, Phoebe, Rhea, Theia, Themis, and Tethys. They were followed by the one-eyed Cyclopes and the Hecatonchires or Hundred-Handers. Cronus ("the wily, youngest and most terrible of Gaia's children") castrated his father and became the ruler of the gods with his sister-wife Rhea as his spouse.

Cronus had deceived his father, and he feared that his offspring would do the same. Gripped by this insecurity, he ate up every baby Rhea delivered. The forlorn mother tricked him by hiding her newborn son, Zeus, and wrapping a stone in a baby's blanket, which Cronus ate. Zeus grew up and he once fed his father a drugged glass of something that caused Cronus to vomit, throwing up Rhea's other children and the stone, which had been sitting in Cronus' stomach all this while.

Zeus challenged Cronus to war for the kingship of the gods. Obviously, Zeus and his siblings were victorious, while Cronus and the Titans were hurled down to imprisonment. Unfortunately, the story wasn’t over yet, and the insecurity manifested itself. Zeus was plagued by the same concern as Cronus and things got worse when a prophecy stated that the offspring of his first wife, Metis, would give birth to a god greater than Zeus. Zeus swallowed his wife, already pregnant with a girl Athene, and Athene magically burst forth from his head — fully-grown and dressed for war.

I am a little lost about the events that took place after this. However, according to Classical-era mythology, the Titans were overthrown and the new pantheon of gods and goddesses was confirmed. Among the principal Greek gods were the Olympians, other gods of the countryside, and there also existed the dark powers of the underworld.

The Olympian gods were majestically and democratically dwelling on Mount Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece, built by the Cyclops. The leader of the Olympian gods was Zeus. The Gods had many fantastic abilities like they were unaffected by disease, and could be wounded only under highly unusual circumstances. Immortality is considered the distinctive characteristic of these gods; this immortality and their unfading youth, was insured by the constant use of nectar and ambrosia which renewed the divine blood in their veins.

Each god has a different lineage, pursues differing interests, has a certain area of expertise, and is governed by a unique personality. All Olympian Gods had some human weaknesses and were obliged to take full responsibility of their actions.

Now comes the ambiguous part - Greek myths always refer to the twelve Gods of Mount Olympus, but in total there were fourteen Olympian Gods in Greek Mythology (never more than twelve at one time). The four alternative gods were Hestia, Hades, Dionysus and Demeter. Do you know the other Olympians??

They are Aphrodite, Apollo, Ares, Artemis, Athena, Hera, Hermes, Hephaestus, Poseidon and Zeus.

Be back soon with more details!
